Why Border Regions Matter for Indonesia’s Future

When people think about Indonesia’s border regions, they often imagine places far from major cities — remote, difficult to access, and left behind. Yet these regions tell a different story. Border and island communities are home to rich marine resources, cultural diversity, strategic trade routes, and communities with deep local knowledge.

Indonesia is an archipelagic nation. Its borders are not only lines on a map; they are gateways connecting Indonesia to neighboring countries, global markets, and new opportunities. From tourism and fisheries to renewable energy and cross-border trade, these regions hold significant potential to contribute to sustainable growth.

However, potential alone is not enough. Access to education, infrastructure, investment, and stronger local institutions remain essential. Sustainable development in border regions requires collaboration between communities, governments, academia, media, and private sectors — ensuring local voices shape broader national agendas.

The future of Indonesia may not only be shaped in major cities, but also in the islands, coastal areas, and border regions that have long remained beyond the center of attention.
